2. He adds many years in Washington, and the respect of world leaders that he already has positive relationships with. True, he's gaff-prone, but even so he could write some of those books that Obama had to study as a political science major at Columbia University.

5. He adds the second chain of command if something were to happen to the president. Don't you know any basic facts of government?
6. Joe Biden has a lot of experience and expertise. Obama is inexperienced, and an old hand like Biden is very useful to him. And as has already been mentioned, he also provides comic relief. We need someone to make fun of now that Bush is out of power. :P

8. Humor Hes a nice guy with a big mouth and a lot of experience. Obama is more of a serious sort, its hard to make fun of him. Comedians aren't given much material thats just plain funny without sounding simply partisan. So Biden fills the gap.
