Why Was U.S. Vice President-Elect Joe Biden (D-DE) Sworn In Today For His Seat In The U.S. Senate?

In November 2008, Biden won re-election to the Senate, but I assumed he would not accept his seat should he win the U.S. Vice Presidency. Why did he bother to be sworn in as a U.S. Senator today, seeing as how he will have to resign the U.S. Senate seat in less than two weeks? Source is CNN - I saw him today being sworn in by Cheney.

  1. Source please?
  2. He will resign in two weeks. Because he is really doing nothing now as vice president elect, there is no reason he should resign until the 20th.
  3. Because the senate is going to be doing some very important work in the next 2 weeks (about the economic stimulus plan) and every vote might matter.
  4. Biden will soon be replaced by his former longtime aide, Edward "Ted" Kaufman, who is expected to hold the seat for just two years until Biden's son Beau, can run for the office after fulfilling his duties with the National Guard in Iraq.
