If Mitt Romney were not Mormon, would he be the Republican Nominee?

I can't help thinking this guy would have been the perfect conservative poster child if he were the nominee in spite of flip flops, but I think his religion may have killed him in the South, and much of the evangelical portion of the electorate, and the electorate on the whole who were suspicious of Mormonism due to its doctrine. I also think this because he has tons of money with which to fund its campaign, looks good for TV, and has a pretty wife and kids. So if Willard Mitt Romney were not a mormon, would he be the GOP Presidential Nominee?

  1. Probably.
  2. He should of been muslim it worked for obama OBAMA 08 (because they dont have an intelligence test isnt required to vote yet)
  3. i think more because of his flip flops he lost, also he seemed like a rich politician from massachusetts trying to buy an election..kind of the same way john kerry lost..i really think that his mormonism had a minimal impact; aside from perceptions, he was a really weak candidate and there was no true conservative except maybe thompson running this year
  4. Absolutely.
  5. He's a phoney. That was his problem.
  6. Unfortunately, it was probably his Mormonism which killed his chances. I have studied the Book of Mormon and other Mormon books. I do not agree with their teaching at all, but I do agree with their values system. I would have voted for Romney over McCain, but certainly support McCain over the socialist twins.
  7. No. His Mormonism didn't play. It would have, had he gone further...just like Obama's faith. Stupid really, but there y'go. He was kicked mostly because he's viewed by conservatives as too liberal, even moreso than McCain.
  8. Hell yeah!
  9. Authority is not given to you to deny the return of the king!
  10. I do not think his being Morman had much to do with it in the south. If he was a black Mormon he would have won the nomination.
  11. It is hard to say but you're probably right. I was going to vote for him in the CA primaries, but something told me not too. Well he dropped out right after. I think it is silly that people do this I am a devout Christian, and though I don't agree with his religion he would be a good president.
  12. His concession speech was great. There were just too many republicans backing McCain. I don't think him being a mormon was a big part of it. He certainly has set himself up for a run in 2012.
  13. Probably. Romeny was being crucified because in the distant past the Mormon church didn't accept African Americans. That has been changed since 1978. Yet barack is to get a pass for supporting Wright?????? please....
  14. Possibly, maybe VP?
  15. No chance. This guy REEKS of insincerity, and people smelled it quickly. He got tagged (rightly so) with the filp-flop label early on, and it done kilt him good. Good riddance, I say. Romney is without doubt an alien reptile invader wearing human skin, trying to infiltrate our government. I'm sure of it.
  16. He is a successful business man, and that's what we need to fix this economy. Not hope, not rhetoric, not race, not gender, not patriotism. I wish whoever wins have enough sense to surround them self with qualified people.
  17. There's no way to know. Being Mormon probably got Romney as many votes as he lost because of it. That said, I think Romney lost Iowa, not b/c he's Mormon, but b/c Huckabee is Baptist. If he had won Iowa, Romney would have been the nominee...irregardless of his religion.
  18. I would vote Romney if he weren't a mormon. Sorry I have just had so many run ins with mormons and let's put it this way. After careful consideration ... those guys are complete nutjobs.
  19. most likely...but his being mormon is what fueled his popularity so much.
  20. I think so. However, it might have also been very different if Guliani stayed in the race and Huckabee dropped out earlier. Had that happened, it's very possible that McCain and Guliani would have split the vote of the "liberal republicans" and Romney would have sailed through as the Nominee. He would have been THE guy to fix the economic disaster that we're in. No one else has a clue.
