Has any other Mormon before Gov. Mitt Romney run for President of the United States?
Not that anyone is going to vote for Mr. Romney. I would like to know though.
Public Comments
- I don't know.
- Mitt's dad, George Romney, tried to run in 1968 but was ditched after he said that on a tour of the Vietnam war zone, the generals tried to "brain wash" him into thinking that the war was going well. Of course, George spoke the truth. Mitt, on the other hand, has brazenly lied about the war in Iraq. During the last debate, Mitt said that Iraq had to be invaded because Saddam had kicked the arms inspectors out of the country, so there was no way of telling whether Iraq had WMD. In fact, the inspectors been there for 4 months, had made 400 unscheduled inspections, and had found nothing. Mitt apparently learned from his dad's experience, that if a Republican candidate lies about a war, he can stay in the running. Interestingly, George Romney's religion was not an issue in 1968. The questions that revolved around Romney were: did he have the requisite national level experience in politics, since he had only been a state governor, and was he smart enough (his manner of speaking was plodding, but not unintelligent, like Bush). Another interesting fact or two: although Romney was a staunch Republican, he believed in rebuilding the inner cities with affordable housing and was a strong supporter of civil rights. All this is proof of how far the Republican Party has come in the last 40 years.
- his dad did.
- No. Rember that LDS (Latter Day Saints) is more of a way of life than it is a religion. It's not a cult, its everyday people living a good life.
- Religion, Politics and Beer make bad things happen. Don't drink, vote, pray at the same time. We had some hootnannies for the first three, are proof of that.
- Orin Hatch, Senator from Utah
- Yes. His father, who did quite well.
- Actually three other Mormons have run for president. Joseph Smith, George Romney, and Orin Hatch.
- Yes. Joseph Smith did.
- I think Joseph Smith ran back in the day.
