Election of 1864?

How did the war complicate the election? Why did Lincoln think he was going to be defeated? What happened to change that? What were the election results in general and specifically among the northern soldiers? What was significant about the results?

1. You need to get a history book on the civil war. I don`t have the time to write one for you.
2. Much like the last Presidential election. the war was a disaster and going badly. the north was loosing most of the battles, the public and the media was looking at it as an unpopular war. Many Democrats wanted to negotiate peace. Europe wanted to get us to negotiate a peace. The press called Lincoln a Monkey and drew him as such (sound familiar). The Democrats decided to run a war hero (again sound familiar) Mclellan was popular with the troops. The republicans actually thought of running someone else. Lincoln removed the Writ of Habeus Corpus and had people thrown into prison for talking against the war. (GW asked for a suspension of it as well). Lincoln wound up winning as Gettysburg turned the Southern offensive.
