Is flip-flopper Mitt Romney really going to be the "conservative" alternative to McCain?
Doesn't Huckabee fit the description of being a conservative better? Romney used to be a centrist governor of Massachusetts who was pro-abortion, pro-gay rights, and pro-gun control until he decided that he was a "conservative" in order to help out his credibility in the presidential election. With Mike Huckabee still in the race, running on banning abortion and denying equal rights to gays (as well as replacing the income tax with the "Fair" Tax), is Romney really the "conservative" alternative to the center-right frontrunner McCain?
Public Comments
- Unfortunately yes, Mike Huckabee is low on funding. Romney can spend millions to be the alternative to McCann. I don't think he will win the nomination though. McCann has all the momentum not, and as long as Huckabee doesn't drop out he will split the conservative vote.
- McCain is hardly a centrist; he has voted and co authored the most prominent leftist bills of our time. Huckabee is a tax hiking RINO who believe the Reagan Era is over and the day of bigger governments has returned. Romney may have changed positions but at least he is saying he supports conservative ideas. Would I prefer Thompson or Hunter; you bet, but I think Romney is the best we can get.
- None of them are good people...
- Essentially the "conservatives" (read ultra right wing extremists) are having trouble picking a candidate because none of the candidates is as extremist across the board as they would want them to be. McCain admitted that illegal immigrants are human beings. Romney accepted that everyone having health insurance is a good thing. Paul wants to stop illegally invading other countries and killing people. But I agree, I am not sure what act of compassion or decency by Huckabee has annoyed the far right so much. I would have thought a religous nutcase who wants the poor and middle classes to pay more tax and the rich less was just thier sort of guy. But McCain is looking strong - suggesting that most Republicans are actually fairly moderate and our "conservative" friends are not the majority they pretend to be.
- Although I believe that Ron Paul is the best choice, I will concede that Mitt romney is the next best choice and actually has a chance of winning this!
- Romney is what ever you want him to be, Ask nicely.
- If from Massachusetts and you are not accurately describing Mitt Romney. Romney was never pro abortion. He was always personally pro-life. He had a very hard time getting past that during the election for Senate and the Governship. Pro gay-rights is not the same thing as pro-gay marriage. Romney testified in Congress for the anti gay marriage amendment, but he believes that everyone deserves to have equal rights. The national tax is a bad idea that should not be passed. Talk about putting more money in the governments hands to screw around with. That is not a conservative approach to taxes. Mitt has done a lot for this state balanced the budget and turning a $3 BILLION deficit into a surplus. Mitt did not raise taxes. Mitt got legislation that would enable the top 25% of students to got to state colleges and universities tuition free. Mitt vetoed 800 pieces of wasteful pork legislation. Mitt did not pardon or commute the sentences of more than 1,000 inmates, including murderers, like Huckabee did. And Mitt's kid didn't kill a dog then try to cover it up. Huckabee and McCain both disgust me. I support Mitt Romney.
