Is Barack Obama really Muslim?

I've heard conflicting stories lately and just want to know the truth.

Public Comments

  1. No; he's a christian.
  2. How many times will this question be asked no he is a christian and if you want to believe the Republican play books smear tacktics so be it...
  3. He WAS but not anymore.
  4. He's Christian! Here he is testifying for the Lord. I speak with some experience on this matter. I was not raised in a particularly religious household, as undoubtedly many in the audience were. My father, who returned to Kenya when I was just two, was born Muslim but as an adult became an atheist. My mother, whose parents were non-practicing Baptists and Methodists, was probably one of the most spiritual and kindest people I've ever known, but grew up with a healthy skepticism of organized religion herself. As a consequence, so did I. It wasn't until after college, when I went to Chicago to work as a community organizer for a group of Christian churches, that I confronted my own spiritual dilemma. I was working with churches, and the Christians who I worked with recognized themselves in me. They saw that I knew their Book and that I shared their values and sang their songs. But they sensed that a part of me that remained removed, detached, that I was an observer in their midst. And in time, I came to realize that something was missing as well -- that without a vessel for my beliefs, without a commitment to a particular community of faith, at some level I would always remain apart, and alone. And if it weren't for the particular attributes of the historically black church, I may have accepted this fate. But as the months passed in Chicago, I found myself drawn - not just to work with the church, but to be in the church. For one thing, I believed and still believe in the power of the African-American religious tradition to spur social change, a power made real by some of the leaders here today. Because of its past, the black church understands in an intimate way the Biblical call to feed the hungry and cloth the naked and challenge powers and principalities. And in its historical struggles for freedom and the rights of man, I was able to see faith as more than just a comfort to the weary or a hedge against death, but rather as an active, palpable agent in the world. As a source of hope. And perhaps it was out of this intimate knowledge of hardship -- the grounding of faith in struggle -- that the church offered me a second insight, one that I think is important to emphasize today. Faith doesn't mean that you don't have doubts. You need to come to church in the first place precisely because you are first of this world, not apart from it. You need to embrace Christ precisely because you have sins to wash away - because you are human and need an ally in this difficult journey. It was because of these newfound understandings that I was finally able to walk down the aisle of Trinity United Church of Christ on 95th Street in the Southside of Chicago one day and affirm my Christian faith. It came about as a choice, and not an epiphany. I didn't fall out in church. The questions I had didn't magically disappear. But kneeling beneath that cross on the South Side, I felt that I heard God's spirit beckoning me. I submitted myself to His will, and dedicated myself to discovering His truth.
  5. If you don't know the truth by now then just forget it. No he is not and never was. His father was raised by a Muslim but his father never was a Muslim.
  6. He addressed this in the debate on Tuesday night. No he is a Christian. here's a news link to add to that.... http://www.newsweek.com/id/91424
  7. Whatever you hear is probably a LIE. Obama, Clinton, Guiliani, and probably all the candidates are going to LIE to get your vote!
  8. No he's not. People that are telling you otherwise are trying to sink his campaign by spreading lies.
  9. I doubt it. His father was, but I suspect that. like me, he is an agnostic. He has to claim to be a christian, otherwise he would never get elected.
  10. He is not a Muslim, but has probably received Muslim education early in life. His step-father was a Muslim (said to be non-practicing). He might be considered an apostate by Muslims, which could have an impact on his dealing with them should he become president.
  11. No, his father was a Muslim and his mother raised him Christian.
  12. No, he's Christian. People are just trying to find ways to make him lose support. This is a lie that has been blown way out of proportion and hopefully he won't lose votes because of it.
  13. Obama Has Never Been A Muslim, And Is a Committed Christian. NEWSWEEK: "Dueling chain e-mails claim he's a radical Muslim or a 'racist' Christian. Both can't be right. We find both are false. If these two nasty e-mail messages are any indication, the 2008 presidential campaign is becoming a very dirty one. One claims that Obama is 'certainly a racist' by virtue of belonging to Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ, which it says 'will accept only black parishioners' and espouses a commitment to Africa. Actually, a white theology professor says he's been 'welcomed enthusiastically' at the church, as have other non-blacks. Another e-mail claims that Obama 'is a Muslim,' attended a 'Wahabi' school in Indonesia, took his Senate oath on the Koran, refuses to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and is part of an Islamic plot to take over the U.S. Each of these statements is false. These false appeals to bigotry and fear remind us of the infamous whispering campaign of eight years ago, when anonymous messages just before the South Carolina primary falsely accused Republican candidate John McCain of fathering an illegitimate child by a black woman." - http://www.barackobama.com/factcheck/2007/11/12/obama_has_never_been_a_muslim_1.php From Obama's book 'Audacity of Hope': "I was not raised in a religious household. My maternal grandparents, who hailed from Kansas, had been steeped in Baptist and Methodist teachings as children, but religious faith never really took root in their hearts. My mother's own experiences as a bookish, sensitive child growing up in small towns in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas only reinforced this inherited skepticism. [...] My father was almost entirely absent from my childhood, having been divorced from my mother when I was 2 years old; in any event, although my father had been raised a Muslim, by the time he met my mother he was a confirmed atheist, thinking religion to be so much superstition. It was because of these newfound understandings–that religious commitment did not require me to suspend critical thinking, disengage from the battle for economic and social justice, or otherwise retreat from the world that I knew and loved–that I was finally able to walk down the aisle of Trinity United Church of Christ one day and be baptized. It came about as a choice and not an epiphany; the questions I had did not magically disappear. But kneeling beneath that cross on the South Side of Chicago, I felt God's spirit beckoning me. I submitted myself to His will, and dedicated myself to discovering His truth." Kennedy's Houston speech in 1960 declaring his independence from the Vatican...Obama offers the first faith testimony I have heard from any politician that speaks honestly about the uncertainties of belief.” — E.J. 16. he is a christian
  17. That's what Hillary is spreading around...
  18. According to the Muslims - Once a Muslim Always a Muslim - and Barack Obama has deep Muslim roots. He may claim to be a christian, but we don't really know what is in his heart, and where his true loyalties lie. But if his past is any indication - christianity is only a convenient tool to pry his way into the American religious community to collect votes. It's always amazing to me how many people use christianity to further their own personal agenda and it really has nothing to do with being a true believer. Words are cheap.
  19. He's a 20+ year practicing Christian. It was addressed in the last Dem debate
  20. One half muslim and 1/2 christian 1/2 black and 1/2 white
