Was John McCain a true American during his imprisonment in Vietnam and after that, or is his conduct in doubt?
Here is a Website that goes into these issues. I'm not sure what to think about it. http://www.newswithviews.com/Devvy/kidd60.htm

- About as much as Kerry. Like nobody ever questioned his valor until the GOP hierd the "Swiftboat Veterans" But then Karl Rove is laying low in this cycle so it'll probably not becoma as prominent. Seems the democrats are less likely to participate in "scorched earth" tactics.
- I dont think that anyone can ever imagine what John McCain went through during those 5 1/2 years. Also all the other war prisoners who were goig through the daily torture. We should never judge them. They have already been in Hell. Never judge another until you have walked in his shoes.
- a true American would not surrender to the enemy
- wow if those are the facts he is an easy target to sink in the elections -
- I think what he went through in Vietnam has withstood any possible new criticism. I think what is more questioned is how "real" he is on the campaign trail. Many will say he is not the congenial guy he shows himself to be, but rather more foulmouthed and temper prone.
- I don't know. What's a true American. There seems to be so many different sorts which is the charm that makes the whole damned thing interesting and not entirely repugnant. The best and worst of humanity, I reckon. Which it shares with others. Which doesn't answer the question. Perhaps only an American could answer it, or even think to ask it! For me there are only human beings, and individuals doing the best they can or whatever they can justify.
- He was born in the US, which under current law makes him as much an american as anyone else who is entitled to a US passport. His POW status only made him a prisoner - nothing more.
- Zelda dear, is this a trick question? You tell me what makes a true American, other than being born here or naturalized, and then I'll answer! There are probably as many definitions of "true American", as there are Americans. For myself, I think patriotism (and any other belief system that sets "us" against "them") is a destructive idea that prevents us from recognizing that we are all interconnected. We must all live together, or we will all die separately. I think the question I would ask is "Was John McCain a true Human Being (or "spreader of light", or "helper to his fellow man" or "true teacher to his captors") during his imprisonment in Vietnam....etc?" We were not there and have no idea what he might or might not have endured, both physically and psychologically. I am suspicious of the information on the link you cite, because it is amateurish, obviously not objective and contains no documentation or sources. I think it's more important to examine the man he has become, rather than what he did then. I myself have come a long way in the forty years since Vietnam, and would hate to be judged on who I was back then!! An experience such as he endured must have changed him. What he has become (and what he will be, if elected president) seems far more important to me than who or what he was in a difficult situation, in his youth, over 40 years ago.
