- It's actually a party election. The state handles the mechanics as a sort of courtesy to the party and to the voters. You'll note that each party has a handfull of candidates seeking a particular office. This is the party turning to the members and asking "Ok. Who do you want to get our nomination?" After all the states have held their primary elections (some states have caucuses. The mechanics are different, but they are seeking the same goal; choosing who the party's candidate will be.) it will be clear that one candidate will have the most support. This candidate will win the party's nomination and go on to the general election in November and face the candidate who has the nomination from the other party. I guess I could have pretty much said it all in one sentence; the primary elections help the partys decide who their nominee is to be.
