Why did Rudy Giuliani want this man to be Head of Homeland Security?

Rudy Giuliani supported Police Chief Kerik to head Homeland Security. Kerik has just given himself up to authorities in regards to working with the mob. So why did a Presidential Candidate want this man to run Homeland Security? http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7087364.stm

1. The only possible explanation I can think of would be that Rudy wasn't aware of Kerik's associations with the Mafia...
2. Because Rudy had no idea that he was doing anything with the mob. As far as rudy knew he had done a great job on everything and was trustworthy. Rudy cannot be blmed for everything the people around him do. Rudy is still by far the best candidate out there.

4. Guiliani may have supported Kerik but I tell you Giuliani is not part of mob. He put five bosses in prison. But he got mob roots, trust me....
