- The first election of our current president is interesting because he lost the popular vote, yet won the Electoral College. The election of president Kennedy is interesting as it was the first "television" campaign AND he was the first Catholic elected president. Both had a huge impact on the election. Lincoln is also interesting, because the south felt they had no true say in his election, thus used it as a reason to secede from the Union. Hope that gives you some ideas! :) EDIT: Hmm .. someone here must be a Bush fan ... I noticed ALL references to the 2000 election were thumbs down! And mine wasn't even a criticism.
- Try it on George Washington, one of the founding fathers of this nation. Well, you can speak about how there are some rumors that he wasn't the actual first president, supposably , there was another guy, his last name is Hanson.
- How about the very controversial U.S. election in the year 2000? George W. Bush vs. Al Gore http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._presidential_election,_2000 EDIT>> Thumbs down??? Mine was not a criticism either... If you want an interesting project, pick an interesting election. (I also agree with Beth above on the other elections.) My choice was one where the Democratic candidate received more popular votes but fewer electoral votes than the Republican candidate and still lost (I think it happened also 2 times before in U.S. history.)? A month of controversial court challenges and recounts before a winner was declared? ... Whichever one you pick, remember, if you pick an election that was unique or controversial in some way, you can write a much more thought provoking paper.
- agreeing with Beth as the Bush over Gore was a definite scam. why should we vote our president in by electorial votes when our vote is the one that should count!!!!!!
- How about the one that in which Truman ran against Dewey. The declared Truman the looser before the West Coast results were in. (Maybe you've seen that famous photo in which Truman holds up the newspaper with the headline "Dewey Wins." You may be able to find it in Wikipedia.) I believe that Dewey was maybe the mayor of NYC, or some official there, who broke the Mafia in New York and declared that Lucky Luciano would be in jail for the rest of his life. During WWII, the mob controlled everything in NY, but especially the docks. The dock unions, controlled by the mob, refuse to move any war supplies because of this. Naturally, the soldiers were depending on these things. So Dewey got Luciano and a few other mob bosses to get the dock workers to move the supplies again in exchange for Luciano being deported to Italy rather than staying in jail. Of course, this didn't come out until ten years after the war, around the time of this election.
- the best one i can think of is john kennedy......
- Well -- rather than concentrate on a President, why not zero in on an important time in our history in which the President played a part...for example: Women's right to vote (19th Admen). What was this, and who was President at the time. What did he think about it - was he for it or against it and why. Does it matter that the President even had a say in it? Was he and the congress Democrat or Republican? We were the first big country to give the right to women? Did the past presidents push for this, or did they not want this?
- Two that come to mind are JFK vs. Nixon and the 5 o'clock shadow, and the one where the papers jumped the gun in printing up Dewey's victory.
- Well, If I were you I would do the project on the 1913 Elections. It was 3 people fighting for the office. Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, & Woodrow Wilson.
- How about Franklin Roosevelt? He had some important (though controversial) resolutions following the Great Depression. Many feel that his tactics got us out of the depression. Check it out, it's pretty cool.
