If Mitt Romney becomes President, does his Mormon religion mean there will be a Second or even a Third Lady?
Public Comments
- of course not, polygamy was outlawed years ago
- Only a small sect of fundamentalist Mormons still believe in polygamy.
- absolutely... but, answer this: will he even have the slightest change to be elected by the American people -- who, by far, believe in monogamous relationships? hmmmm...dont think so Bub
- Bill Clinton did it in the white house on the presidential desk.
- Possibly but so what..JFK had a wife and several mistresses ! whats the difference?
- Mormons no longer practise polygamy. You can now get kicked out of the Church for that, you know. Please, before you say wild things like that, read the facts. WHY do people make a big deal out of the idea of a Mormon president. No one cares if they are Catholic, or Protestant or Baptist, but everyone makes a fuss over the idea of a Mormon President! WHY? Our morals are not much different from that of other faiths!
- Mormons outlawed polygamy over 100 years ago.
- ha. I see you have a sense of humor. No, Mormons don't practice polygamy, and those who still do aren't Mormons.
- As others have stated, your question made me laugh. As you probably know polygamy hasn't been a practice of the church for nearly 150 years, and anyone who participates in it cannot be a member. It is not only against the Mormon teachings, but against the law (and Mormons value upholding the law).
- No, of course not. That's illegal for one thing (president... law... some connection there...) And you get kicked out of the church for polygamy anyway. And I agree with whoever complained that it isn't fair... if someone please would explain why everyone doesn't want an LDS president but they don't care if he's Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, Protestant, etc... We're just MORE value oriented, how can that be a bad thing?
- That was funny... Any Mormon in good standing with the church does not practice polygamy. If they did, they would be excommunicated. But thanks for asking.
- No. But that brings up the question, what if a president divorces the First Lady and marries a second time? Is the second wife a second First Lady, or the first Second Lady? And what if he divorces his second wife and marries another? Is she the Third Lady, or the third First Lady?
