Is Mitt Romney unethical by referring to the Newark student murders in his campaign ad?
Mitt Romney's "illegal immigration" makes reference to the recent Newark murders of three college students. A news wire article reports the following copy... "Immigration laws don't work if they're ignored. That's the problem with cities like Newark, San Francisco and New York City that adopt sanctuary policies," an announcer says in the ad, which runs in New Hampshire and Iowa. "Sanctuary cities become magnets that encourage illegal immigration and undermine secure borders." Newark is not a "sanctuary city". This crime was horrible but even Newt Gingrich didn't blame Newark. He blamed Washington. Is it ethical for Mitt Romney to capitalize on a murder in Newark in a campaign ad?
Public Comments
- LOL!!! Uh, no.
- Mitt is right, illegal immigration laws are not being enforced. Is it ethical for Al Gore to capitalize on Global Warming?
- Is there something unethical about freedom of speech or simply stating the facts? That's what Mitt Romney did.
- most of the blame should be put on washington... but, there are "sanctuary" cities. and that's a huge problem.. right up there with businesses who hire illegals. as far as newark being one of those cities.. i have no idea. haven't heard that one before. btw, how does the ad mentioning newark as a "sanctuary" city translate into romney capitalizing on a murder?? i haven't seen the ad.
- Newark is too a so-called sanctuary city. Romney is right about this. the actions of some of the dim-bulb libs are placing a lot of innocent Americans in danger. What were the Mayor of Newark and that idiot judge thinking when they allowed a person who was in this country illegally to walk out on bail after being accused of repeatedly raping a 5 year old? How stupid is that?
- He,s a Republican & a Mormon. They have no concept of ethics when it comes to human suffering because people like us have diminished capacity for pain, even emotional pain, compared to people like them. And his kind of people would NEVER be caught dead in NJ,
- I wouldn't say it's necessarily unethical, but it's not particularly good campaigning. That could potentially backfire if the Newark citizenry gets up in arms. I just think it is dumb.
- It is unethical to ignore the problem of illegal immigration and rising crime due to illegal immigrants, as well as to ignore the unethical and unamerican practice of sanctuary cities. You are wrong about Newark (they do not ask or research the immigration status of the offender UNTIL they are convicted). Romney was right on this, and I applaud him. I hope to see more of this from him in fact. Illegal aliens should be deported in all cases, wherever they are found, and however they are found.
- Ethics can have a very large gray area. It can all come down to social norms although some ethics are largely accepted. Perhaps you refer more to politically correct. I think you can say that anyone (not just immigrants) commit crimes. However, it is safe to argue that more impoverished people commit severely more heinous crimes against others. So in that regard letting anyone live in your borders without providing proper support can lead to a criminally infested "sanctuary". I think immigration is great but in moderation. And to the ignorant comment about Mormons...there REALLY ARE Mormons in NJ, and everywhere else in the world. Please don't hate what you fail to comprehend. Thank you. From a personal stand point I am all for Mitt Romney winning in 2008 he has more ethical values than all of the candidates put together.
- Yes, Newark is a sanctuary city, and it's not unethical to tell the truth.
