Ron Paul has been endorsed by Barry Goldwater Jr. Does this improve his chances to win the nomination?
source: http://www.ronpaul2008.com/press-releases/45/ron-paul-endorsed-by-barry-goldwater-jr Ron Paul, the anti-war Republican and staunch opponent of the IRS and just about every other government agency, has been endorsed by Barry Goldwater Jr. Back in the 70s, Ron Paul and Barry Goldwater Jr. worked together in Congress to try to reduce the size of government. They both had failed runs for Senate and retired from Congress. Ron Paul would run for president in 1988 (as the Libertarian Party candidate) and return to Congress in 1996. Now, Ron Paul is up to 6-7% in the "scientific" polls (and the pollsters acknowledge that his support is greater than it appears; he is actually ahead of Fred Thompson in New Hampshire) and is the leader in the money primary on the Republican side (even though the special interests won't give him any money). Does this endorsement improve Ron Paul's already strong chances to win the GOP nomination and the White House in 2008?
Public Comments
- I think every person that comes out and endorses Paul helps, especially someone with Goldwaters Creds
- As a so called Lib/Dem, I find Ron's position refreshing, and wish him all the luck in the world, however, he needs to change a lot of Republican minds before he can take the nomination. The Republicans want a Neocon in office, whereas People like me will weight the choices, and Ron is looking pretty good. In my case, better than Hill, Rudy and Fred.
- I'm hoping it does
- ummm...didn't barry goldwater sr. lose? why would his son's endorsement win any favor? ron paul will not win...can't win...will never be the republican nomination... giuliani seems to have it tied up, but huckaby is coming on stronger.... and who knows? he may walk away with the nod...
- i think that awareness of ron paul is spreading very quickly. a lot of college students are just becoming aware of him and his ideas. as the nominations draw closer, i think we may see a shift in who the final frontrunners are.
- I like Ron Paul and would definitely vote for him if given the chance but to tell you the truth,"I don't think he stands a chance". The "higher ups" in the Republican party as well as the mainstream media seem to have written him off as a "Fringe" candidate. It's going to take an awful lot to overcome that. However the primaries are still over 50 days away and a lot can happen in that amount of time, soooooooo, we will see.
- No. Nobody cares about Barry Goldwater, Jr. Besides Ron Paul may have a good message but he comes across as scared and inarticulate. He should have hired a speech coach and he would have been taken more seriously.
- Here is the unfortunate answer. Ron Paul CANNOT win. Sorry to break the news to you.
- No, it hurts his chances. I liked Barry Goldwater Sr, but the modern Republican party, not just the leaders but the people, hated him. If Ron Paul were running as a Democrat maybe this endorsement would help him. It's not gonna help him against Huckabee or Romney.
- it can only help
- Yes it does. There are a lot of Goldwater Republicans out there who are going to rekindle the spirit of the 60's and take back this country. Ron Paul is the right man at the right time.
- Typically endorsements rarely have a great impact. I think Ron Paul's best chances would be if his supports toned it down a bit. His supporters are too in-your-face for most voters, yet they dismiss other candidates without a logical explanation (even ones with similar views as Paul - Huckabee).
- Most young people will ask: who is Barry Goldwater? Was he in the James Bond films? I think Ron needs alot of positive coverage from the liberal mainstream media, and about the only thing they have in common is the opposition to the war. Other than that, they consider his anti-IRS views as heresy. I anticipate he will be smeared with the kook label by both the liberals, and the hypocrite conservative media like Rush, Hannity, Levin, Savage, etc. who preach small government but then treat Ron like he is a liberal because he opposes the war.
- I think Barry Goldwater Jr.'s endorsement helps him a great deal inside the Republican party ranks. Anybody of celebrity status has name recognition, and that helps his/her candidate, also gain in popularity. Hall of fame pitcher, Nolan Ryan of Texas, helped Dr. Paul beat George Bush's candidate, in a previous congressional election.........Now, if we can just get some of those World Champion Red Sox stars to endorse Ron......Curt Schilling, Josh Beckett, David Ortiz & # 1 closer Papelbon, {From Texas} where are you? ******************************************************
- one would hope that it does; but i would think that a lot of people would be reminded only of Barry Sr.'s huge defeat in 1964 and draw their conclusions from there, however unfair that would be...
- Yes, an endorsement from any familiar name can help Ron Paul's chances. Assuming the endorsement doesn't come from someone widely considered a "fringe wacko". Or Osama bin Laden. There's also increasing Ron Paul support coming from Democrats (shades of Ronald Reagan ;). http://ronpaul.candidatetube2008.com/index.php?video_id=h5TzmNTcj68&tag=Ron+Paul+democrat+supporters
