Rudy Giuliani...so what exactly does this mean??
So I've started researching 2008 presidential candidates (it'll be the first time I get to vote...I'm excited) and their views and editorials and praises (try to keep an open mind). Well I was on Rudy Giuliani's website and this is what he had to say on his view on gay marriage. "Rudy Giuliani believes marriage is between a man and a woman. He does not—and has never—supported gay marriage. But he believes in equal rights under law for all Americans. That’s why he supports domestic partnerships that provide stability for committed partners in important legal and personal matters, while preserving the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman." So does that mean that he would legalize gay marriage even though he doesn't personally agree with it because it's what the constitution allows? Is "domestic partnerships" the same as "gay marriage" or does that just mean that it would be legal for them to live together just not get married or what? so how is a domestic partnership different than gay marriage?

- NO its a step down
- Domestic partnerships is a term used to allow gay marriage without calling it marriage. In reality, it has 100% of the same benefits, etc. What you would find is that the gay rights activists would then push for education reform which would still teach (if not promote) that "domestic partnerships" are a normal lifestyle. In otherwords, Rudy is perhaps personally against gay marriage (though I am not convinced) but thinks that legally it should be allowed, but under a different name. Noone...In what way? Other than name, that is. COME ON PEOPLE...if it is a step down...IN WHAT WAY? Other than title, it provides all of the same rights and responsibilities, so how is it a step down?
- I don't even believe Guiliani knows what he believes in or not. I think it's just words to make him seem as if he supports gay marriage when he doesn't. Actually I don't care what Guiliani thinks. He had an adulterous affair with a woman not this wife. He is a nothing. If a man cheats on his wife AFTER he married, he is nothing but a lie.
- Its a step down from marriage but with all the government benefits. As a Christian he does not support gay marriage but politics should not be mixed with religion. So by supporting domestic partnerships he can be on both sides (the gay and the religious) and still get votes.
- Yes, they are politically different. He's just saying gay marriage defies religion; but civil union or domestic partnership - basically two, same-sex people that live together and state legally they are in love or relationship are eligble for benefits straight couples are eligble for in the eyes of the Government. The real issue here is so partners get benefits. Like one can place the other on their health insurance, just like a husband may do for a wife. I feel it is logical to give people all equal rights, even if they want a legal marriage recognized by law. This can be debated back-and-forth but the fact that not all marriages are religious and still happen (even atheist get married) and that some people treat the insitution of marrige lazily (those who marry in Vegas after knowing each other for 1 night and then divorcing - i have like 5 friends I know who did this) that right there means to me that they too, gays, should be able to get married. I believe in total individual freedom. Look into Libertarianism. I am excited for you that this is your first time! Please research the tough issues you don't know to be thorough! This is my second time. The first time I let popular opinion affect me; but this time I have researched all and I don't listen to the media about who has a chance and who doesn't. Personally, I have chose Ron Paul. Good luck!
- I think Rudy is playing all sides here. He's saying he's against gay marriage in order to satisfy the republican conservatives, and he's throwing gays a (fake) bone by saying he supports "domestic partnerships." What is this domestic partnership anyway? What I mean by that question, is, that it is false. He has no intention of creating or supporting domestic partnership legislation. I think he's just telling stories in an attempt to appease more liberal voters. I can't really answer your question "what is a domestic partnership" because nobody has nailed down the specifics. It's a pipe dream. If Rudy supports equal rights for all Americans, then he can create laws that create equal opportunities and remove barriers for everybody in all things, rather than playing one constituency against another. As an erstwhile cross-dresser who has lived with a gay couple (when his wife kicked him out of the house after he had an affair), I don't know why Rudy is pretending to be a republican, or even a person of sufficient character to be an acceptable leader. His own children can't stand him, and that should tell you a lot about his character.
- What he is saying is that his personal belief is that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. However, he recognizes that EVERYONE has equal protection under the law and believes that domestic partnerships, whether called "marriage" or "civil union" should be legalized under the protection of the Constitution. In other words, he wouldn't marry someone of the same sex, but he has no objections if someone else does. Marriage protects the partnership legally. Marriage guarantees right of inheritance, division and equalization of property, etc. A marriage is merely a LEGAL contract between two people. Only the churches make it holy. There is no need for a minister to make a marriage legal...Anyone appointed by the state can perform the swearing of the contract between two people.
