Joe Bidens Plan for Iraq?
For those aware of his plans for Iraq, share your thoughts? I am supporting Joe Biden for president in 2008. I feel he is the strongest, most articulate, and well polished of all the Democratic Candidates. He has a great record. Please no bashing, just share you input on his plan as well if it will help his chances of getting nominated by Democrats. Sorry for typos - I type fast! I asked for no bashing - I wish people could just follow directions or listen. UGH!

- NOt another Bush. In thanking a young Indian-American man for the support of his Indian-American group, Sen. Biden touts how Indians are the fastest growing immigrant group in Delaware and says, "You CANNOT go into a 7-11 or a Dunkin Donuts without an Indian accent." In a critique of the Democratic field, he said of Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois: "I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy," he told the New York Observer, a weekly. "I mean, that's a storybook, man."
- Since Iraq was an artificial country whose borders were drawn by outsiders (Gertrude Bell, mostly) and since they can't get along, maybe splitting it into 3 separate countries (Shia, Sunni, Kurd) might be the best solution.
- It reminds me of the Annan Plan for Cyprus. I think it could be a workable plan, but what I think is largely irrelevant, because for it to succeed it would need be adopted by the Iraqi government, hopefully through a referendum.
- I think that Biden's plan is a good one in theory. But I do see a large problem with it. It is the Iraqi government and their parliament. It is clear that their parliament is not only slow-moving, but seems to have little concern for solving the politics that continue feeding this civil war. We're talking about a group who's still going to take a two month vacation, despite our urging that it's unacceptable in light of our soldiers dying daily in defense of their country, and despite the sectarian daily bloodbaths and the chaos that rules their country. It doesn't mean Biden's plan is impossible but I think it's unrealistic to believe that Iraq can be structured this way in time to bring our troops home by the end of 2007, which is what Biden is suggesting. Leaving residual troops behind is absolutely necessary, for the reasons he states, ie dealing with Al Queda, etc.. But he wants to leave the guarding of their borders to the Iraqis and I think that's a huge mistake. Their military isn't anywhere near trained well enough to stop Iran or Al Queda from moving in in a large way. He has good ideas, but I think he's being unrealistic about the time these ideas will take to come to fruition.
