Where does John McCain stand on the issues?

John McCain often comes off as a moderate to conservative and a maverick, as a man owned by no one. Where does he really stand on issues? I have trouble finding this in web searches. Can someone point me in the right direction?

  1. Generally speaking, he's moderately to the right - although, the further to the left one is, the further to the right he appears to be. Funny how that works, no? I don't know where you can go to see the specifics - have you tried his Senate web pages?

  5. On the fence.
  6. I believe he takes the Republican stance on most issues, i.e, abortion, gays, etc.... I'd be surprised if his voting record is much different than most Republicans. His demeanor and rhetoric are less harsh than most, I think that is the difference. Also, I don't think he'd make gays a top priority for example. He is more pro-immigration than most Repubs - he is for the "amnesty" provisions of the proposed immigration bill (in fact, did he co-sponsor it? I don't remember.) He has said harsh things about the religious right in the past, although he back tracked this year, due to his presidential aspirations. That would seem to go against the perception that he is a "straight talker." Of course, no one can be a "straight talker" and run for president, but that's his main theme. I doubt he would have went to war on Iraq had he been president, but that is speculation obviously.

  8. He is truly his own man. I like that about him. More politicians should be that way instead of representing the lobbyists that donate large sums of money to their campaigns.
