Did Barack Obama take his oath of office to be Senator, with his hand on the Quran?

The below R&S post states just this...yet, when I search the internet...the only one I find that took an oath on the Quran was Keith Ellison. Is this true or an urban legend as it relates to Barack Obama? Can anyone point me in the direction to this answer. Also, look at the picture attached on the post...is this for real? Does Obama really not salute the American Flag...again, is this true or urban legend? Any links to proof would be appreciated. I am a fiscal conservative and social liberal...However, I could not support someone who would not salute the flag of the country that he wants to govern. In addition, if he doesn't want his hand on the Bible fine...but, he should not put his hand on anything.... http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

  1. First part: No. Urban legend. second part: http://mediamatters.org/items/200710240006?f=h_latest seems a bit overblown. BTW: I wonder how you become muslim now er days. My great grandfather was a turkish guy...but was not really into religion so he married a catholic...sent kids to catholic school...ect...So does that make me muslim all the sudden? I did not know you could inherit this stuff. It gets worst! I'm an agnostic. So as far as right wing conspericy theory land goes...and I catholic, muslim, or agnostic? How does this work? Also this kind of makes me giggle, cause my girlfriend is Indonesian (same as Obama's stepfather) that hot bed of fundamentalism it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5dx-ZYZbZY
  2. SO you can take an oath on the bible but nothing else? Typical rightwing quack
  3. As the prior post stated, the flag this is an urban legend. As for the Quran issue, that's false too. By the way, he's not a practicing Muslim. He's protestant. Attends the Disciples of Christ Church. I too am a fiscal conservative and social liberal, but I question if you truly are a social liberal by the concerns you raise in your question. By the way, if you are a fiscal conservative, you'd have to be out of your mind to vote Republican.
  4. No, the candidate who chose to use the Koran was Keith Ellison, a Representative from Minnesota, not Senator Obama. And it was an "unofficial" swearing in ceremony. When the time comes for new Representatives to be sworn in, no Bible, Koran, or other book is involved. The Speaker of the House asks everyone to stand and raise their right hands. All 435 members are sworn in right then, at their desks, at the same time. That's the swearing in ceremony. Later, a Representative may schedule an "unofficial" ceremony to be photographed for the voters in his/her district. THAT ceremony is set up by the Representative's office and can include anything he/she wants... a judge, a friend certified to give an oath of allegiance, and any book the Representative chooses. He could even choose to use no book at all. That ceremony has no official standing... it's just for the folks back home.
  5. No, he took his oath with his hand on a Bible as he has belonged to a Christian Church forever. And he does salute the American flag. There is only one picture of where he didn't. In all the others he has.
  6. Swiftboat!!
  7. If; With all that is going wrong in our country and world today, Your greatest concern is whether someone salutes a piece of cloth or did or did not place his hand on a book at a ceremony - You might have a priority problem!!
