He was clear and confident on many issues. I think he was that warm, grandfatherly aura that Reagan used to have. And I think there are a lot of people in America right now who want that in a President. But more importantly, McCain has the experience and the skill to do the job. Its true that the McCain campaign has been through some tough times recently. But in fact this might be a safe space for McCain. He's not the frontrunner that he was 6 months ago. He's no longer the man to beat. I think you'll see Gulianni start to fade, along with Romney. Fred Thompson will turn out to be a dud. As for the democrats, they are looking to nominate some candidates that will ultimately be unelectable. There is a small, growing movement that is going to become the "anyone but Hillary" vote. She may get the nomination, but she won't win the election. She won't get the soccer moms, nor will she get the swing vote I just think it will be a war of attrition. When McCain gets the nomination he won't be blamed for Iraq. Hilary voted for the war and won't address this issue. John McCain's campaign is actually in a pretty good spot right now. Guiliani is too liberal supporting things such as gay rights, abortion, and gun control to win enough conservative votes. Huckabee is too conservative to win in moderate states and liberal states in the primary. However McCain seems to be conservative on issues such as execution, defending against terrorism, against gay marriage and abortion, and supports citizens rights to own guns. He seems to do well in the west which has alot of moderates and where the other half of people are either liberal or conservative.
Is Panamian Born John McCain a "Natural Citizen" under Constitutional qualifications for President? To clarify my earlier question the following facts should be considered: 1. McCain was born in Coco Solo, Panama in 1936 to US Military/Citizen Parents. 2. The Naturalization Act of 1940 specifically excluded the Panama Canal Zone; 3. The Navy Hospital at Coco Solo was not included in the US Navy controlled property until Executive Order 8981 was signed on December 17, 1941. 4. Under Panamian law, McCain is a Panamian Citizen (unless he formally renounces it to an authorized Panamian Official - has he done this?) 5. 8 USC 1403 which deals with Citizenship of persons born in the Panama Canal Zone after 1904 declared that all persons so born are US Citizens was not in effect until 180 days after June 27, 1952. There is NO DOUBT that McCain is a US Citizen. The unresolved issue is whether he is a "Natural Citizen" as required by the Constitution. The important question is that was the difference between a "Natural Citizen" and a Citizen on the date that McCain was born. Not what is the law now. The significance of this is that the Supreme Court has never ruled on this issue. What would happen if McCain won and Gore sued and the Supreme Court ruled that on his birth in 1936 McCain was not a "Natural Citizen" but a "derived Citizen"? Would the Vice President immediately become President and all the bills/laws signed by McCain become void? Congress did on March 26, 1790 under the first naturalization law: state: "And the children of citizens of the United States that may be born beyond sea, or outside the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born citizens." However, that Act was repealed by an Act of Congress dated Jan 29, 1795 Chapter 20. It has been changed many times since. On McCain's birthdate in 1936, the citizenship of a child born to US parents was not automatic (natural born), but had to be granted by the State Department since he was NOT born in a US Territory! The mainstream media, in their not-all-that-liberal style, likes to call Sen McCain a "mavarick" and a "moderate", but when I look at his voting record I don't see it. John Mccain not fit to be president? I am sick and tired of people saying that being a war hero doesnt make you a president. Say that to george washington or dwight eisenhower. Yes, there have been some that have been a dissapointment like grant, but serving your country no matter what the cost, is a big asset, bc it gives candidates the confidence that you will country before anything else. So if a war hero is not a good credential than what is. Being very articulate like richard nixon? Or to look presidential like john f kennedy or bill clinton? Does John McCain still have a chance? He's starting to build up his campaign funds again. He's getting more press. He's making sense on the issues. His campaign did take a tumble, but he appears to be holing his own at the moment. Thompson is in, and the race is still wide open. I predict that we'll see a few of the frontrunners fall by Christmas, but McCain will still be in the game. From there he could jump right back into the top slot. We shoudn't count this guy out. How exactly is John McCain going to beat Hillary Clinton? Lets say its a Clinton/McCain race. Most Americans think we never should have gone into Iraq in the first place, they want the troops out of there alive ASAP, and Hillary promises to start troop withdrawl within 90 days of taking office. McCain's view is more aligned with Bush's policies AND McCain is loathed by the right side of his party while Clinton is backed ardently by the left side of hers.
